Notice
Prohibited and dangerous goods
Some goods cannot travel by air, and others can travel only under strict conditions. All of them must be declared.
You must declare these goods before you book
Dangerous, restricted and regulated goods are subject to airline rules, the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations, and the laws of Sri Lanka and of the destination country. Tell us exactly what you are sending. Undeclared or misdeclared dangerous goods put aircraft and people at risk and can lead to the cargo being seized and to penalties for the shipper.
Dangerous goods
These are articles and substances that can pose a risk to health, safety, property or the environment in the air. Many everyday products fall into this group. Examples include:
- Explosives, fireworks and ammunition
- Compressed and flammable gases, including aerosols and gas cylinders
- Flammable liquids, such as paints, solvents, perfumes and fuels
- Flammable solids and matches
- Oxidizers and organic peroxides, such as some bleaches and pool chemicals
- Toxic and infectious substances
- Radioactive material
- Corrosives, such as acids and wet batteries
- Lithium batteries, and equipment that contains them
- Magnetized material, dry ice and other miscellaneous dangerous goods
Some dangerous goods are forbidden on aircraft altogether. Others may be carried only when they are correctly classified, packed, marked, labelled and documented by a trained person, and accepted in advance by the airline.
Whether a particular dangerous goods shipment can be accepted depends on the goods and on the airline. Contact us before you book.
Prohibited and restricted goods
Separately from the dangerous goods rules, some goods may not be exported or imported, or may move only with a permit or licence. Examples include narcotics and controlled drugs, weapons, counterfeit goods, protected wildlife and plants, antiquities, and currency above permitted limits. The list depends on the laws of Sri Lanka and of the destination country, and it changes.
Goods that need special handling
Perishables, live animals, valuables, human remains and temperature-sensitive goods are accepted by airlines only under specific conditions. Contact us first so we can confirm whether we can arrange it.
Our right to refuse
We may refuse, hold or return any cargo that we or the airline believe to be prohibited, undeclared, misdeclared or unsafe. The shipper is responsible for the accuracy of the declaration and for any cost that results from an inaccurate one.
Not sure?
Ask before you pack. Send us a description of the goods, and the safety data sheet if there is one, and we will tell you whether and how they can travel.
